Some members, who joined either the Firefighter’s Pension Scheme (Fire 1992) or the New Firefighters’ Pension Scheme (Fire 2006) will not join the Fire 2015 scheme. This is because they were close to retirement when the Fire 2015 scheme was launched.
You must have been paying into either scheme on 1 April 2012 and 1 April 2015 to qualify for this protection and if you do, you will continue to earn benefits in the former schemes as before, as well as seeing no change in the age when you can retire.
More information is given in the Guide for members who joined before 1 April 2015.Watch the video
You will stay in your current scheme and not join the new 2015 scheme if, on 1 April 2012, you were at least 45 years old or you were 40 or over with at least 20 years’ service.
You will stay in your current scheme and not join the new 2015 scheme if, on 1 April 2012, you were age 50 or over.
This is known a full protection. SPPA will write to you if you qualify. Alternatively, if you have not already done so, you can answer the questions by clicking on the link “What does this mean for me?”
Information relevant to you can be found on the main area of the SPPA website.
