care about your future

Some members of the 1995 or 2008 sections of the previous NHS Pension Scheme, will join the NHS 2015 scheme, not on 1 April 2015, but at a later date specific to them. This is because they were close to retirement when the NHS 2015 scheme was launched but they did not qualify for full protection.

This is known as tapered protection.

In general, to qualify you must have been paying into the scheme on 1 April 2012 and 1 April 2015 and were more than 10 years but less than 13 years and five months from your normal pension age.

If you had a break in pensionable service of less than five years and rejoined after 1 April 2012 you may also be eligible for tapered protection.

SPPA will write to you if you qualify for tapered protection. Alternatively, if you have not already done so, you can answer the questions by clicking on the link ’What does this mean for me?'

Information about the 1995 and 2008 sections of the NHS Pension Scheme can be found on the main area of the SPPA website. You can find out when you will join the NHS 2015 scheme by using the tapered protection calculator.

Please note that the former NHS Pension Scheme closed to new joiners on 31 March 2015.

Tapered protection formula

Tapered protection is applicable where a member is beyond 10 years but less than 13 years 5 months from their normal pension age (NPA) as at 1 April 2012.  The formula subtracts two months from the protection period that for each additional month beyond 10 years which the member is away from their NPA as at 1 April 2012 (rounded up to the nearest whole month).

If you are in the tapered protection period as described above, you can find out when you will move to the NHS 2015 scheme by using the tapered protection calculator or by opening the table which applies to you below and finding your birthday.

If, on 1 April 2012, you were less than 50 but more than 46 years and 7 months old (i.e. you were between 10 years and 13 years 5 months from your section’s normal pension age of 60) you will not move to the NHS 2015 scheme on 1 April 2015 but at a later date determined by the tapered protection formula.

If you are in the 1995 section tapered protection period you should also read the information on the Choice page upon the main SPPA website.
